Superannuation fund Aware is investing in a new investment platform that will acquire, construct and operate an independent network of intermodal terminals. The $160 billion pension fund has taken a stake in the Intermodal Terminal Company, which will own and operate a freight hub on the outskirts of Melbourne called Somerton. Aware expects the new $400 million hub to capture market share from existing terminals owned by Pacific National and Qube, which handle most of the city's rail freight traffic. The Australian superannuation fund believes the new hub will unlock efficiencies and value from the government's $31 billion east coast Inland Rail project by shifting freight off trucks and onto trains.

The largest investor is Aware Super, which has invested in the project to gain exposure to what it calls a "newly-emerging infrastructure sub-sector". Krish Gandy, portfolio manager for infrastructure and real assets at Aware Super, told IPE Real Assets that the fund sees potential in the creation of an independent network of intermodal terminals. The other investors in the project include Endeavour and Hostplus.
